Spectrum

Access high bandwidth across Australia with greater control and lower cost.

What is Spectrum?

Spectrum is a high-capacity, scalable point-to-point photonic service that provides customers with complete control over a virtual segment of a fibre using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology.

Spectrum is built for large enterprises and carriers who run their own DWDM equipment and need a dedicated, high-capacity path for demanding workloads; such as data centre interconnection, latency-sensitive applications, or metro and regional backhaul, without the cost of leasing an entire fibre strand.

How does Spectrum’s DWDM technology work?

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is an optical technology that multiplies the capacity of a single fibre strand by transmitting multiple data signals at once, each carried on its own wavelength of light.

Rather than needing separate fibres for separate signals, DWDM combines dozens of independent channels onto one strand, which is what allows Spectrum to deliver speeds exceeding 400Gbps over Lumea's existing Fibre in the Sky network, without needing to lay new fibre.

Features and benefits

High Bandwidth

Our highest bandwidth product, offering speeds exceeding 400Gbps (equipment dependent).

Customer Flexibility

A virtual spectrum link that can be independently managed via customers' own equipment and upgraded as required without network overhaul.

Operational Control

Real-time control and monitoring over wavelengths, to effectively manage large-scale data flows or latency-sensitive applications.

Scalability and Control

Spectrum leasing services provide optical spectrum users with a higher degree of freedom over technology selections.

Economic benefit

Leverage existing fibre assets with no overbuild requirements and access to a portion of the fibre with a size of your choice, resulting in a lower incremental investment and more connectivity opportunities.

Futureproof

A Flex-grid photonic network that supports a wide range of spectral widths and modulation schemes, making technology transition smooth.

Why choose Lumea?

Stringent operational standards

LUMEA differentiates itself by operating in a critical infrastructure environment - Our assets are held to stringent operational standards.

Innovative solutions

Critical thinking is a key pillar of Lumea. We work outside traditional parameters to offer customers innovative outcomes.

Fibre in the Sky

Our Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) aerial fibre ensures built-in physical resiliency and security against natural disasters and fibre vandalism.

How Lumea Spectrum works

Spectrum connects your DWDM equipment at each site directly into Lumea's Photonics platform, which carries your dedicated wavelength across our OpGW aerial network between sites.

Because you manage your own DWDM equipment at each end, you retain full control over the service while Lumea manages the underlying fibre path. Along the way, you can also connect into any of Lumea's 25+ data centres across NSW, VIC, QLD and ACT, extending your network without deploying extra infrastructure.

Spectrum FAQs

What is Lumea Spectrum used for?

Spectrum is most often used for data centre interconnection, metro and regional backhaul, and other latency-sensitive workloads that justify the cost and control of a dedicated wavelength.

Yes, Lumea Fibre is inherently secure, with dedicated wavelength channels and encryption options to protect data traffic from external access and maintain privacy.

Unlike Dark Fibre, where customers lease the entire fibre, Spectrum allows flexible access to the portion of the fibre's capacity required by the customer. This reduces costs and management needs, as the provider oversees the infrastructure.

Customers can elect for contract periods between 3–10 years.

Unprotected path fibres offer network availability of 99.5%, and protected paths offer 99.95% availability.

Yes, Spectrum gives you a dedicated portion of Lumea's optical fibre, which you manage using your own DWDM transponder equipment. This is what gives you full operational control, unlike a managed wavelength service.
