Community Engagement

Enabling Australia's energy transition requires the infrastructure to connect renewable energy and community partnerships that support it.

Partnering with communities across Australia

Australia’s energy transition presents a once in a generation opportunity to provide low cost energy that can help industries scale efficiently and exponentially.

This will catalyse all kinds of new businesses, from companies building the equipment needed to harness the energy, to technology start-ups at the forefront of discovering new ways to create, transmit, store and use renewable electricity.

Access to abundant renewable energy will help existing industries grow, attract new investment and enable innovation in emerging sectors. From manufacturing and technology to energy infrastructure and services, the transition will create opportunities for businesses, workers and communities alike.

But this legacy will only be made possible because of our regional communities and depends on strong partnerships with those that will host and enable these projects.

The Opportunity

The Community

These projects will help Australia reach net zero sooner, but they also change the way people live in the regions where this infrastructure is built.

Lumea works with governments, customers and industry peers to champion an approach to community engagement that puts First Nations people, farmers and local residents at the centre of how projects are planned and delivered.

We believe the best outcomes are achieved when communities are engaged early, listened to respectfully and supported to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect them.

Lumea’s six principles for community engagement

1. Place-based approaches

We maximise the opportunity of every place by considering its context, characteristics, capabilities and legacies.

2. Transparency in communications

We deliver proactive, regular, transparent and accessible communications.

3. Deliver lasting benefits

We enable diverse and inclusive community involvement throughout the project lifecycle.

4. Respectful engagement

We build positive and trusting relationships with stakeholders and communities.

5. Valuing community expertise

We co-design and partner with communities for community and project benefits.

6. First Nations First

We value First Nations people's wisdom and knowledge.

Earning Social Licence

Renewable energy projects only succeed with the backing of the communities that they’re built in.

Without that trust, projects face delays, opposition and reputational risk that no amount of engineering can solve.
Lumea builds trust with communities through meaningful engagement and shared value.

We consider the context of each community and listen to the unique needs, values and concerns of the locals, wherever we operate. Consultation begins early and stays transparent throughout, with community input embedded directly into decision making rather than sought after the fact.

Landowners are consulted with transparency and receive fair and equitable compensation, while the success of every project is measured against the lasting benefits it delivers locally.

Indigenous communities are engaged with genuine respect, with cultural heritage and aspirations woven into how our projects are planned and delivered.

Beyond individual projects, Lumea invests directly in the communities we work in, through partnership and funding projects that support local jobs, skills and business opportunities.

This is how Lumea creates positive social outcomes for communities, forming relationships and leaving legacies that last well beyond project delivery.

Supporting Our Customers' Social Licence

Lumea's customers carry responsibility for their own social licence, but they don't have to build it alone. We bring the on-ground relationships and long-term community presence needed to help our customers earn and maintain that trust, so their projects can move forward with confidence.

Reconciliation Action Plan

Lumea, as part of the Transgrid Group, is leading the energy industry in its commitment to reconciliation. We value inclusion and diversity and we are proud to be part of the Group's Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan.

Acknowledging the strength of the reconciliation initiatives that have been delivered and embedded over the past four years across all areas of the Transgrid Group, Reconciliation Australia invited us to develop the Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) linked above. Only about 7 per cent of companies with a RAP have progressed to a Stretch RAP.

We are committed to our reconciliation efforts and see this as a benchmark from which we can continue to strengthen our initiatives and commitments.
