The Tumbarumba community has received a $200,000 boost to sport and recreation facilities under Lumea’s community investment program as part of its Snowy 2.0 Transmission Connection Project.

Lumea Executive General Manager Craig Stallan said: “We are committed to forming meaningful relationships with local communities and leaving a positive legacy for many years to come.

“As we build new infrastructure to support Australia’s clean energy future, we are working hard to provide social and economic benefits to the local community.

“That’s why Lumea is pleased to support these not-for-profit organisations to help make a positive difference to the lives of local residents by delivering much-needed sport and recreation facilities.”

The following projects have been successful in receiving financial support from Lumea:

  • Cycle Tumbarumba – $32,000 to purchase and install a solar and battery system for the Mt Tumbarumba Trails Facility
  • Tumbarumba Start Strong Preschool – $88,000 for outdoor playground landscaping
  • Tumbarumba Public School P&C – $80,000 to upgrade playground equipment.

Cycle Tumbarumba President Peter Marshall welcomed the grant from Lumea for the Mt Tumbarumba Mountain Bike Park.

“Access to power will significantly improve our ability to maintain the trails and enhance safety, allowing us to charge radios, tools and support essential operations,” Mr Marshall said.

“It will also help us host events, meetings, and other club activities, making full use of the facilities being built. We are appreciative of this support, which brings us closer to realising the park’s full potential for the community.”

The new Tumbarumba Start Strong Preschool being built at King George V Park also welcomed the support from Lumea after receiving a grant under Transgrid’s (Lumea’s parent company), Community Partnerships Program earlier this year to purchase books for its children’s library.

“The donation from Lumea means the Tumbarumba Start Preschool will open with a covered sandpit and irrigated gardens for the playground,” Tumbarumba Start Strong Preschool President Julia Ham said.

“A lot of preschool education happens outdoors and the playground Lumea has helped fund is a great contribution to the early childhood education to be enjoyed by the young children in the Tumbarumba district.

“The committee will continue to fundraise for equipment for the preschool, however, the generous donation from Lumea has made the creation of the new preschool a lot easier and has enabled the committee to focus on the children. Our sincere thanks to Lumea for sharing the vision for expanded early education services in the community.”

Lumea hosted a workshop of more than 70 Tumbarumba residents in August to gain feedback on priorities for community investment. Further projects will be considered for funding in due course.

Lumea is also providing support for Saving Our Native Animals, funding the development of a website for the local wildlife rescue organisation.

The critical Transmission Connection Project will connect Snowy 2.0 to the national grid, enabling greater sharing of cheaper, cleaner energy with millions of Australians on the eastern seaboard.

It will help unlock the economic benefits of Snowy 2.0 by providing improved energy security and reliability, and lower energy costs for consumers. The project is also creating up to 140 new jobs in NSW and providing supplier opportunities for local businesses. Up to 90 workers are living and working in Tumbarumba, providing a boost to local businesses.
