Lumea to Conduct Electrical FEED Study for Port of Newcastle's Clean Energy Precinct
Port of Newcastle has engaged Lumea to conduct a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study as part of preliminary works for its Clean Energy Precinct. The preliminary works will span the next 12 months, marking a significant milestone in advancing a clean energy future of the Hunter Region.
As part of the preliminary works, Lumea will conduct an electrical FEED study to assess the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of the project. The study will ensure that the Clean Energy Precinct is developed optimally, considering the needs at present and developing a sustainable future. Additionally, the connection process with Transgrid Group will commence based on the anticipated load from the precinct's operations, which is expected to reach a maximum load of 1,500 MW by 2030.
Lumea’s Executive General Manager, Craig Stallan, expressed his enthusiasm about this partnership, stating, “We are really excited to be working with the Port of Newcastle on this project, and we congratulate them on adopting a progressive approach to electrification of the port. It provides a benchmark for other industrial customers across Australia who are seeking to move towards an electrified future.”
Lumea’s Tony Ryan, GM of Energy Services attended a launch event at the Port of Newcastle on Monday 14th October to formally announce the signing of tenders for electrical and water feed studies. The Clean Energy Precinct is part of the broader vision for transforming the Hunter Region into a hub of renewable energy production. By providing key infrastructure, including land, utilities, and export services, the precinct will enable a diverse range of clean energy projects to flourish. Lumea, has been instrumental in shaping the energy landscape through its innovative transmission solutions. 
CEO of Port of Newcastle Craig Carmody said, “Today is a significant step forward for the Hunter Region. The Clean Energy Precinct is central to the Port of Newcastle’s diversification strategy to create the Port that our community, our region, and our state needs for the future. This phase will determine the infrastructure and services critical to the progression of the Precinct’s development and push us further towards hydrogen readiness”. Upon completion of the FEED study, Lumea looks forward to supporting the connection process for the various projects that will anchor the precinct.
This collaboration between Lumea, the Port of Newcastle, and key stakeholders marks a crucial step towards Australia’s clean energy transformation, setting a precedent for industrial customers across the country to follow.
